Japanese Nuclear Power Unit Automatically Shuts Down Due to Generator Alarm

Category: Industry News

Time: 2026-08-12

Summary: TOKYO, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- According to Kyodo News on Aug 9, Unit 3 of Kansai Electric Power’s Ōi Nuclear Power Plant in Fukui Prefecture, Japan, automatically shut down on the evening of Aug 8 due to a generator alarm. Kansai Electric Power stated that no injuries were reported and no radioactive impact was caused to the surrounding environment.

The shutdown took place at around 23:55 local time (22:55 Beijing time) on Aug 8. Kansai Electric Power is investigating the root cause, and the timeline for unit restart remains undetermined.
According to Kansai Electric Power’s official website, the Ōi Nuclear Power Plant has four units. After the Fukushima nuclear accident in 2011, Japan’s nuclear reactors were successively shut down and later restarted. Units 1 and 2 of the Ōi plant were decommissioned in 2018. Following the malfunction of Unit 3, only Unit 4 remains in operation.

Event Insight: Sudden Shutdown of Major Power Supplies Highlights the Value of Backup Generator Sets

Although the automatic protective shutdown of Ōi Unit 3 triggered by a generator alarm caused no radiation incident, it reflects a common industry reality: large‑scale main power facilities including nuclear and thermal power plants are exposed to risks of equipment failure, abnormal alarms and unplanned outages. Unexpected main‑power interruption will directly disrupt industrial production, engineering projects and commercial operations, resulting in production halts and financial losses.
No main power source can guarantee zero‑failure operation 100 % of the time. A reliable emergency backup power generation system serves as critical fallback protection.
We specialize in supplying generator sets ranging from 0.8 kW to 3000 kW together with a full range of generator spare parts. Our products suit diverse scenarios such as construction sites, mining projects, overseas factories, commercial premises and infrastructure works. Compact‑power models deliver emergency power for shops and small‑size facilities; heavy‑duty industrial units act as backup power for large‑scale projects and overseas sites to cope with grid blackouts and unforeseen equipment shutdowns.
We supply complete units as well as replacement spare parts for later maintenance. Ocean‑going export shipping is available. We can calculate freight for port‑to‑destination delivery, or accept customer‑appointed freight forwarders for ex‑works terms. We offer competitive pricing for global markets including Africa and Southeast Asia.
When main power equipment suffers unpredicted breakdowns, stable‑performance backup generators minimize economic losses caused by power outages. Please feel free to contact us for quotations and technical proposals if you require generator sets, spare parts or custom backup‑power solutions.
