Time: 2026-09-10

Summary: Driven by explosive global demand for AI computing power and the rapid rollout of hyperscale data centers, the market for high-end backup power supplies has entered a structural dividend cycle. According to the latest McKinsey industry report, global electricity consumption for AI computing will keep expanding at a high rate. Between 2025 and 2030, power demand associated with AI computing will multiply, directly fueling surging demand for emergency diesel generators deployed in high-tier data centers. Industry experts note that amid rising volatility in new power systems, frequent extreme weather events and continuously upgraded power supply standards for computing infrastructure, diesel generator sets stand out as the "last line of defense" for high-grade data centers worldwide. They deliver unmatched strengths: exceptional reliability, fast response, robust load capacity and independent operational stability.

Fortifying the Power Security Foundation for High-End Computing Infrastructure

Thanks to irreplaceable core merits, diesel generator sets have become a mandatory standard component in global data center construction.

Compared with other backup power equipment, diesel generators offer multiple differentiated advantages, making them an optimal solution for premium computing infrastructure. First, ultra-fast response and seamless switching. Diesel generator sets can start automatically and reach full-load grid connection within 10–15 seconds, bridging the short-duration power gap of UPS systems. This eliminates computing outages and data loss triggered by grid flickers or blackouts, fully meeting the ultra-high power reliability requirement of over 99.995% for top-tier data centers. Second, strong load capacity and wide adaptability. AI computing clusters feature sharp instantaneous power fluctuations and concentrated loads. Diesel units can withstand full-load shocks and maintain stable high-power operation for extended periods, performing reliably under harsh conditions including high altitudes, high temperature and humidity, floods and typhoons.

In addition, diesel power systems boast high energy independence with no endurance bottlenecks. They do not rely on natural gas pipelines or power grids; stored fuel enables continuous full-load operation for 24 to 96 hours, far outperforming gas generators and electrochemical energy storage in risk resistance. During disasters, grid failures or regional power shortages, they can independently sustain core computing hardware. They represent the only equipment capable of long-duration, stable, high-power backup power supply. Furthermore, the technology has undergone centuries of refinement with mature maintenance ecosystems and long service lifecycles, bringing controllable overall operating costs suited to large-scale, long-term global computing infrastructure development.

These irreplaceable strengths have cemented diesel generators as standard hardware for data centers. Under international construction norms for data facilities, high-tier computing hubs must adopt N+X or 2N redundant diesel power configurations, creating sustained long-term rigid demand for premium diesel generation equipment. Since 2026, China’s internal combustion engine sector has seen marked structural divergence. While the overall market remains sluggish, the segment of engines dedicated to power generation has bucked the trend with robust growth, testifying to solid underlying demand. Data from the China Internal Combustion Engine Industry Association shows that total domestic internal combustion engine sales fell both year-on-year and month-on-month in July 2026, with gasoline engines across all metrics declining. Cumulative sales from January to July dropped 0.92% year-on-year. Diesel engines, by contrast, recorded a 10.85% year-on-year sales rise in July and a 10.97% cumulative growth for the first seven months. Power-generation diesel engines reached 336,000 units in cumulative sales from January to July, emerging as the primary driver of growth for the diesel engine sector.

The counter-cyclical strength of the industry fundamentals stems essentially from structural upgrading fueled by rigid demand for computing infrastructure. Ongoing expansion of AI large models and supercomputing centers has unleashed booming global demand for high-end backup power supplies, opening up vast growth potential for premium diesel generation equipment and shifting the industry from traditional industrial backup applications into a core track for high-end computing infrastructure.

Global Capacity Crunch & Tight Market Supply

Faced with worldwide production shortages and reshaping industry landscape, overseas giants have deepened strategic cooperation with leading Chinese manufacturers. They leverage domestic production capacity and local advantages to resolve delivery bottlenecks, while supporting Chinese power enterprises in technological iteration and sector upgrading.

High-end diesel power equipment for global data centers is now in severe short supply with substantially extended lead times. Top overseas equipment vendors are swamped with orders and constrained by production capacity, a clear sign of strong industry prosperity. This also creates a prime window for domestic leaders to upgrade technology and advance domestic substitution.

Many global leaders in backup power for computing infrastructure are refocusing their product portfolios on power generation. Zhou Yahong, General Manager of Rolls-Royce Power Systems Greater China, stated publicly that 25% of global data centers rely on its MTU 4000 series generators for emergency power, holding the world’s top product recognition. Even so, production capacity falls far short of market demand. Its annual generator supply volume for the Chinese market stands at roughly 1,000 units, while actual end-customer orders greatly exceed capacity and the supply gap keeps widening. Delivery lead times vividly reflect the market tightness. Heavy-duty backup generators for data centers from overseas leaders such as Cummins are booked out to 2027–2028, and Siemens Energy’s delivery schedule stretches even further to 2029–2030. Shortages of premium power supplies for AI data centers have become commonplace. Caterpillar has deployed gas generator sets as primary power sources for data centers and secured four orders totaling at least 1 GW. The full industrial chain of large-bore engines for AI data centers is poised for further market expansion. Industry experts expect indigenous manufacturers to accelerate overseas expansion while steadily pushing forward domestic substitution.

Against the backdrop of global capacity shortages and industrial restructuring, overseas giants have strengthened strategic partnerships with leading Chinese manufacturers.

Liu Xiaowei, Senior Vice President of Rolls-Royce Civil Aerospace and President of Rolls-Royce Greater China, noted in an interview with China Industry News that the company attaches high priority to the generator sector. It has established in-depth strategic cooperation with Yuchai, a leading domestic power manufacturer, drawing on the local firm’s manufacturing capacity, market channels and scenario expertise to mitigate global capacity shortages and jointly tap the high-end backup power market in China and worldwide.

Chinese enterprises have also ramped up overseas collaboration. Weichai, a domestic power industry leader, acquired France’s Baudouin back in 2009 and has since made strategic investments in US-based PSI and UK-based Ceres. It has built a full lineup of power generation products compatible with diesel, natural gas, methanol and other fuels, and developed SOFC fuel cell technology, covering diverse scenarios ranging from emergency backup power to low-carbon primary power. It has established energy channels across Europe and the United States, partnering deeply with global power equipment leaders via product exports and overseas subsidiaries to rapidly penetrate high-growth areas including data centers. At present, Weichai and its sub-brand Baudouin have accumulated client and channel resources with overseas partners such as PSI and Generac, delivering products for data center projects in the US, Asia-Pacific and other regions.

Deep industrial collaboration between China and foreign players has broken overseas technological monopolies and capacity barriers, accelerating domestic substitution of high-end power-generation diesel engines. Overseas manufacturers ease delivery pressure using production capacity from Chinese leaders, while domestic firms achieve high-end product upgrading through overseas technological know-how, forming a new industrial ecosystem featuring two-way empowerment and win-win cooperation.
