Summary: In recent years, the global data center market has witnessed robust growth, driven mainly by continuous iteration and advancement of information technology applications including cloud computing, big data, the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence and large AI models. During this period, the data center market has maintained strong growth of over 10%. Notably, China’s data center market achieved remarkable results in 2023, with a market size of approximately RMB 240.7 billion and a year-on-year growth rate of 26.68%. This growth rate far exceeded the global average, nearly doubling it. China’s data center market size was projected to surpass the RMB 300 billion threshold in 2024.

As a backup power system, diesel generator sets play a critical role among the key infrastructure of data centers. In the event of a mains power failure, diesel generator sets can start up quickly, take on load and deliver stable continuous power output to guarantee normal and reliable operation of data centers until mains power is fully restored. Accounting for as high as 23% of data center infrastructure costs, they are indispensable for stable data center operation. Currently, diesel generator sets remain the preferred backup power solution for data centers, with no viable alternatives available yet.

Recently, the capital market has shown intense interest in market developments of high-power diesel generator sets for data centers. Share prices of several major domestic listed suppliers of data center diesel generators, such as Taihao, Ketai, Weichai Heavy Machinery, Sumec and New Power Science (SDEC), have hit daily trading limits. This phenomenon not only reflects market concerns over supply shortages of data center diesel generator sets, but also investors’ optimistic expectations for future earnings growth of these enterprises.

Apart from these well-known listed firms, there are roughly 15 other domestic enterprises of considerable scale capable of manufacturing complete high-power diesel generator sets for data centers. Since April 2024, with the rapid expansion of new infrastructure such as global data centers and intelligent computing centers, the data center diesel generator business, once a buyer’s market, has rapidly turned into a seller’s market. High-power diesel generators for data centers worldwide have been in short supply. Some clients are even willing to pay premium prices to keep their data center projects on track.

Nevertheless, the root cause of market shortages lies not in insufficient production capacity of diesel generator sets themselves, but capacity constraints on their core component: high-power diesel engines. Leading global manufacturers of high-power diesel engines and generator sets, including Cummins, MTU, Mitsubishi, Caterpillar and Kohler Power (Rehlko), are under enormous production pressure, with relevant orders scheduled for delivery beyond 2027. As the market continues to heat up, Aksa Power Generation, a long-established Turkish diesel generator manufacturer, has also actively entered this sector recently.

Within China’s high-power diesel engine market, Yuchai Power, Weichai Power, Pangu Power, New Power Science (SDEC Power) and Jichai have become important players in the data center diesel generator market. Sustained growth of the data center market is expected to bring these enterprises more opportunities and market share, ushering in a golden period of development.

While the ongoing supply shortage in the data center diesel generator market presents certain challenges, it also fosters new opportunities and room for development. Driven by China’s smart manufacturing initiative, the domestic diesel generator sector is gradually rising. An increasing number of Chinese enterprises have stepped into the high-end diesel generator segment and made notable progress in R&D and production capacity. These manufacturers offer strong cost performance and fast lead times, alongside solid competitiveness in customized services and after-sales support. Therefore, with continuous technological advancement and an increasingly complete industrial chain, Chinese smart manufacturing is poised to replace overseas brands and become the mainstay in the key infrastructure sector for data centers.

In addition, the 24th China (Shanghai) International Power Equipment & Generator Set Exhibition and the 11th China (Shanghai) International Data Center Industry Exhibition were jointly held from June 11 to 13, 2025, at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre. Covering an exhibition area of nearly 60,000 square meters, this grand event serves as a platform for domestic and international power equipment and generator set manufacturers to showcase products and technologies, and creates vital opportunities for industry exchange and cooperation. It is anticipated that the upcoming exhibition will unveil more innovative products and solutions, jointly promoting sustained development and advancement of key infrastructure for data centers.
