Summary: This article elaborates on how to determine whether a diesel generator set is new or used. Based on the experience of technicians and veteran operators, the condition of a pre-owned diesel engine can be assessed through a three-step method: **Inquiry, Inspection and Testing**, with testing as the primary step.

1. Inquiry

Ask about the engine’s purchase date, application, reason for sale, repair history, major components replaced, and any operational issues encountered. This helps build a comprehensive understanding of the unit.

2. Inspection

First, verify whether the model is phased out. Next, visually assess the external condition of the diesel engine. Finally, check if all parts are complete and free from damage.

3. Testing

Run the engine test. The specific procedures for diesel generator sets are as follows:

  1. Crank the crankshaft to actuate fuel supply from the fuel injection pump. If the fuel injector emits a crisp injection sound, the plunger assembly and injector are in good condition. If no abnormal noise comes from the gear housing, gear wear is minimal.
  2. Shake the flywheel up and down. Absence of rattling noise and excessive play indicates small clearance between the crankshaft main journal and main bearing shells. Rotate the flywheel; if there is no tapping sound, wear between the crankshaft connecting rod journal and connecting rod bearing shells is not severe.
  3. Engage cylinder decompression and crank the crankshaft. When decompression is released, strong piston rebound force and rapid flywheel rotation indicate low wear of cylinder liners, pistons and piston rings. At this point, the oil pressure gauge reading should be no less than 1, or the red float indicator of the oil pressure gauge should rise quickly; pushing the float manually should require noticeable effort.
  4. The diesel engine starts easily, with colourless or light-grey exhaust, stable rotating speed and no abnormal noises. These signs indicate the diesel engine is in good technical condition.
