The difference between wires and cables

Summary: Wires are usually composed of a single or multiple wires, wrapped in insulation, and are relatively simple.
1. Structural composition
Wires are usually composed of a single or multiple wires, wrapped in insulation, and are relatively simple. And cables are composed of multiple small wires or twisted wires, with multiple layers of coverage on the outside, making the structure relatively complex.
The wire of a wire can be a single copper or aluminum wire, or it can be woven from multiple small wires and wrapped with an insulation layer. The material of the insulation layer is usually rubber, plastic, or paper.
A cable is composed of multiple strands of small wires or twisted wires, usually made of copper or aluminum. There are multiple layers of coverage on the outside, including insulation layer, protective layer, and steel wire layer, making the structure more complex. These hierarchical structures can better protect wires, giving cables stronger mechanical strength and protection.
2. Purpose and Characteristics
Wires are mainly used for indoor wiring, connecting various electrical equipment, and transmitting electrical energy. Due to its relatively simple structure, the wires are lightweight and flexible, making it convenient for construction and layout. However, the mechanical strength and corrosion resistance of wires are weak, making them unsuitable for long-distance power transmission or crossing complex environments.
Cables are widely used for power transmission in outdoor, underground, and underwater environments, such as high-voltage transmission lines and power networks. The cable structure is complex, with high mechanical strength and strong corrosion resistance, suitable for long-distance transmission or harsh environments. But in comparison, cables are more bulky and the construction difficulty is also greater.
Wires are usually used for low-voltage power supply, such as in households, businesses, and other occasions below 220V. And cables are mostly used in medium and high voltage power grids, such as transmission lines with voltages of 10kV, 35kV or higher.
3. Safety performance
Due to its simple structure, weak insulation layer, and low wear resistance, wires are more prone to insulation damage, short circuits, and other faults. Once a malfunction occurs, it poses a significant threat to electrical equipment and personal safety.
Due to the multi-layer coverage protection, cables have better insulation performance and stronger resistance to external environmental influences. Even if there is partial damage, it will not easily cause serious accidents such as short circuits. Cables are superior to wires in terms of safety performance.
4. Laying method
Wires are usually laid openly along walls or ceilings, which is relatively simple and convenient. And cables are often laid underground or in pipelines, which are more suitable for long-distance power transmission.
Underground cables can be directly buried underground or covered with protective pipes. This laying method does not significantly affect the ground environment, but the construction is more complex. When laying cables in pipelines, it is necessary to reserve pipelines in advance, which is a cumbersome process.
